Hale Pohaku-Waimanalo Beach Front-Lic. Rental: #1990/NUC-1689

This was my second stay at Hale Pohaku - I simply love this historic home!! And this was my third rental experience with Private Homes Hawaii - I love working with this agency. They are the best!! Access to the property is seamless. The on site caretakers are friendly and at the same time unintrusive. The beachfront location is perfect without being overcrowded. In fact, at times it feels almost like a private beach. The home is well stocked with essentials and the exit is one of the easiest. I will be back - I hope sooner rather than later. Again, I simply love this home!

Two couples spent a week here in late January, and we enjoyed our stay very much. The reason to stay at this house is the amazing beach. We spent hours each day walking and enjoying the beach itself, and inside the house the picture window in the living room kept drawing us back (and together) for the view. The beach was never crowded, even on weekends and sometimes we were the only people out walking. We swam nearly every day, the surf is low and it is easy to get in for swimming. Plenty of beach towels, toys, chairs, etc. provided. The location is actually very convenient--15-30 min from pretty much everywhere we were interested in. The house itself is very old and has not been updated. We loved the layout, with two bedrooms and a bath on one wing completely separate from the master bedroom and bath on the other side. It was perfect for two couples or two families. However, it was a little awkward getting down to the patio or beach as there is no access from the beach side of the house except through the master bedroom. The beds are very comfortable, the linens and towels of high quality, and the kitchen is very well stocked and has relatively new appliances. The house was very clean. It would have been much more pleasant if it were updated, since the furniture is old, the air conditioners in the bedrooms are noisy (although they kept the rooms cool for sleeping), and the curtains in every room let in too much light, but for a week it was fine.

We stayed in Hale Pohaku for 10 days and had a wonderful experience. The home is almost 100 years old, but meticulously maintained. It was spotless when we arrived and well-stocked with linens, towels, beach chairs/umbrellas, and general household products (tp, paper towels, trash bags, etc). There is a caretaker in a cottage on the property who was welcoming, kind, and very helpful.

The view from this house, and the beach just steps from the door, are spectacular. The neighborhood is an easy drive to attractions such as Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, and Koko Crater Botanical Garden and is close to restaurants and shopping.

We didn’t have a single complaint about this property – it was perfect. Highly recommend!

us beautifully. Superb location. The beautiful beach was just steps from the backyard. Backyard was a nice private retreat to enjoy the water and the beach. Inside the house had large windows looking out to the ocean. This property is lively, charming and a great place to just get away from it all!
The property management company was wonderful to work with. Kind and extremely efficient. Great communication throughout the entire process.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say.From the booking experience and working with the manager Jeremy, everyone involved was very nice to work with and accomodating to our flight schedules on arrival. We could have used more of their services, but didn't need it. My family of 7, including my 2.5 year old, was a perfect place. View and beach access cannot be beat, will absolutely be booking this place again in the future. Thank you so much!

Historic home with a BEAUTIFUL Beach as part of it's front yard. Large grounds and very private.
The home is old,so it took us a bit to get over some cosmetic issues like hairline sink cracks,doors with ocean moisture related issues, some rust etc-BUT after that first impression,the home was like being in a movie set.( Wonderful charm,awesome views and a great sandy beach steps away.) We were ages 2 to 72 and the home was spacious, well equipped for our week stay. This yard and home would be perfect for a wedding.

This is an old, historic, quaint, and unique house and property. I have seen an advertisement for it in Hawaii magazine for years and decided to try it out for our first trip to Hawaii. Overall this is a gorgeous property!! Many features, although old are perfect for this historic home, like some bathroom fixtures, lava rock porch, huge picture windows. It was very clean overall. Hawaiian quilts were beautiful. Furniture was nice for this historic home. Outside was wonderful including lava rock porch, patio and of course the Ocean!! Kitchen was very nice. Air conditioning in bedrooms. Small fan for main rooms for those like me requiring it for comfort. The property manager, owner and caretaker were great!! Thanks!! The only disappointment was quality of some of mattresses. Would strongly suggest replacement of very old mattresses with new ones. The larger mattress in room off porch was not up to pare for this house (old, human stained not bug stained, with old foam topper) so I had our guest sleep on newer smaller one in that room. This is a wonderful property but would be even better with replacement of the very old mattresses. Some of mattresses were new and very comfortable (No stains no bugs) We hope to return soon!! Awesome house right on the beach! The house was large, well appointed and decorated with appropriate period furniture. BIG picture window for enjoying the ocean view. Loved falling asleep to the sound of waves on the beach. The gated entry made it feel extra safe and private. The management personnel and caretaker were professional and very helpful.
We hope to be able to stay again in the future.

Family of 5, Mother, 2 sons, daughter-in-law, and 3 yr old grand-daughter. Room for 2-3 more people. Very comfortable and relaxing setting. Bathrooms could use a little up-grading. Beautiful view from house. Nice beach, nearby park. Would stay here again.

We cannot say enough about our stay, we absolutely loved this home, the location and every detail of our trip. This house provided everything we were hoping for on our family vacation. It’s location on the beach is perfect and stunning...literally steps to the sand. Plenty of room for our big family and amenities for our infant and toddler grandchildren. The living room window provides the most magnificent view of the beach, ocean and spectacular sunrise. The owner and property manager was very responsive. We will definitely be back at this home.

I traveled for a year with my family and wrote a book (How to Run Away from Home and Bring Your Family with you) about the experience. I have stayed in probably 100+ Airbnbs and I own a hotel. I am an experienced traveler and am in the hospitality industry.

We loved this place. It was right on the water. Waves were good enough for kids but not too rough. The yard and outside area were amazing. I can't wait to come back.

My family of 8 (3 generations) really enjoyed our stay in beautiful Hale Pohaku. Beach is wonderful, not crowded and like on the post cards. House was amazing, on the beach, very well equipped with everything you could posssibly need. Jeremy was great, organizing early and easy check in and responding to all our questions immediately. Amazing stay with our family. Only (minor) suggestion would be to get better blinds in master bedroom as the rising sun hits the windows directly at 6am in the morning. Other than that I would recommend this house to everyone and will be back soon.

This house is heaven! If you are looking for a quiet private house with an amazing beach - this is your place. Nicely decorated, this historic house was the first house built in Waimanalo. It is built out of lava rock. It is close enough (rent a car) to some lovely hikes, surfing beaches, Hanauma Bay, Kailua, grocery stores.... But really way leave the house? The kitchen is stocked with every kind of cooking appliance so if you love to cook, which we did, you are set. I'd stay here again, in fact I'd love to live there! We are hoping to make it a yearly visit.

it is beautiful location and great house with backyard beach access to the pristine Waimanola beach. We experienced an appliance failure during our rental but the management staff was helpful, communicative, and did right by us.

Our week on Oahu couldn't have been spent in a better place! If you're looking for a big city experience this is not the place for you!(Although Honolulu isn't too far). The location is peaceful and located on the most beautiful part of the island. The mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. The house is roomy, and fully stocked. Extra beach towels, boogie boards, sand toys for kids etc. Our son was married on the beach, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful beach. Only a few other people were in the area, and all were very respectful during the ceremony. (No photo bombing!) The property manager was helpful both as we prepared for the wedding and when we arrived. The caretakers who live on the property were friendly but not obtrusive. I hope that if I have a chance to return to Oahu that this beautiful home is available.

Hale Pohaku is a beautiful home located right on the gorgeous Waimanalo beach, on the windward side of Oahau. We held our intimate wedding here and this home will always be special to us and we hope to return.

The home has everything you can want for a perfect vacation and feels like the real Hawaii.

Make sure you have a car to access the shops in nearby Kailua (great beach here as well).

Please note some of the house is a bit weathered and some of the furnishings a bit worn (to be expected in an Oceanfront home) and the wifi was a bit slow but none of these things will stop you from having an amazing vacation here.

We had a marvelous week celebrating several family milestones. The house was amazing-the views and the breezes were breathtaking.

It was arranged by my daughter and son-in-law for celebration of my 60th birthday. House was very spacious including bedrooms, living room, and kitchen, etc. It was pleasantly decorated with nicely bloomed orchids every room. Kitchen had all the gadgets and appliances that needed. But best of all is the view from living room and master bedroom. I wish I could've stayed for a month. :-)

Our family recently stayed at Hale Pohaku and it was a dream vacation! Waimanalo is a very quiet town with white sand beach (No Rocks, No Coral, No Currents, Small Waves, some Jelly Fish) and it was perfect to relax from sunrise to dusk. Hale Pohaku property was just as described, it was very clean and sizeable. The layout was great with spacious living room with big windows, all bedrooms have AC. the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry area were good, and for kids the WiFi worked just fine. The ocean view and having the beach just a few steps away was the highlight of every morning. The Property Manager and staff were very helpful (even brought us delicious bread pudding) and the caretakers that live on property were very nice.

On our eighth trip to Hawaii, this was our favorite house so far! The home itself is clean and well-appointed, featuring modern amenities but also a nod to its history with pieces of local art throughout. Our party of seven all loved the house, it's location, the terrific beach just steps away, and especially THAT VIEW from the huge living room picture window. Sunrises are amazing and our daily early-morning routine of "watching the ocean wake up" is something we miss already.

From the beginning, when Jeremy sent us a pdf of all the details we'd need or want, then met us at the home and showed us around on arrival, we were impressed with the preparation and professionalism of our hosts. Everything was as advertised or better, and our stay, despite three days of overcast, rainy weather, exceeded our expectations.

It was so nice just to bask in the quiet of Waimanalo. The nearly-deserted beach, which is the best one we've been to on Oahu, is just beautiful, and the waves are just right for boogie boarding or swimming/playing out past the surfline. We felt safe in the water throughout, although on the windy, rainy days when the surf was higher and pretty rough, we obeyed the posted warnings and stayed out of the water.

We loved the location as well. For food, there are two excellent places to eat an easy block walk away. We walked down and got takeout several times during the trip and were seriously spoiled by the fish tacos, garlic shrimp (some of the best we've had on the island), garlic fries, fresh kahlua pig sandwiches, and even shaved ice that was a quick and easy walk away. Also, location-wise, we were 5 minutes from Kaihlua, about 15 minutes from Hunauma Bay and about 20 from Honolulu. One morning we went ziplining at Keanu Farms on the North Shore (highly recommended - the most fun we had on the trip!) - which is about 75 minutes away, so everything's pretty close.

Well what can I say about this place other than we really enjoyed it. This is a historic home but it does have AC in the bedrooms and is very cool through the rest of the house. The views of the beach and the beach itself were perfect very peaceful and uncrowded great for playing in the ocean and a white sandy beach. I would stay here again

Hale Pohaku is not just a vacation home; it offers you the true Hawaiian experience. I believe Hale Pohaku was the first house built on Waimanalo Beach. There is a sense of timelessness here, and peace.

The view is extraordinary, the garden lush and the location ideal.

I loved the artwork and flowers throughout the house. Furnishings are comfortable. The house is very clean, and the appliances seem new. The beds are wonderful, with fine linens and good pillows. You will fall asleep with the sound of the surf, lulled by the breeze.

The property manager was very responsive to a few questions I had.

My only small quibble - the kitchen knives were not sharp.

I would love the stay here again the next time I visit Oahu.

The house and neighborhood were amazing. Quiet, clean, seemingly safe. Sure, it shows its age. But it has all modern amenities to allow you to have a great stay. Spacious and clean home. By the way, if you are on vacation you should be outside the majority of the time anyway! Back yard is great for exercising prior to a run on the beach. Oh yes, the best beach anywhere! Beach was spacious, clean, and conveyed sheer beauty. Honestly, we did not want to leave! Thanks to the owners (as well as Jeremy) who allowed us to have an incredible visit to Paradise.

We had a great time at the Hale Pohaku! This beautiful home has quite the history, and pictures of this first home in Waimanalo are on the walls. The house itself has 1930s architecture - loved the glass cabinets in the kitchen, beautiful picture window in the living room and small lanai to listen and watch the waves. The location was perfect; lots of small local eateries and a grocery store with everything you need. The property owner was very responsive - we found a few things that needed repair and he was at the house and fixing the items right away and bringing us beach chairs. He also replaced the air conditioning in two of the bedrooms, which made a huge difference in sleeping comfort. But the best was the beach - unbelievably quiet, clean, white sands, like a private beach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Mahalo!

We had an amazing stay and absolutely loved Hale Pohaku. Our only complaint was that beds & pillows were a little outdated and hard/uncomfortable - something we quickly forgot about after getting up every morning to the beautiful view of the sunrise over this amazing beach. The house was very well stocked with everything you might need - kitchen items, towels, beach toys, etc. and the grounds were amazing. Very friendly caretakers as well. We certainly recommend Hale Pohaku and will definitely be back.

The location was wonderful, perfect for a wedding. The house had a lot of charm and character. The house has everything you would need to have a pleasant vacation, however, the house could have used a little more cleaning. All in all, great times and memories.

We had two couples and two toddlers at this property and had plenty of room. What a beautiful place. We didnt want to leave! Even when inside the house you feel as though you are right on the beach because there is so much light and all the windows on the east side. Having the sounds of the ocean and the ocean breezes lull us to sleep every night was amazing! The sand at the beach is the finest I have ever experienced-perfect for sand castles. And the heated outdoor shower station for cleaning up before coming back inside was fantastic. We absolutely loved our stay here!!!

My wife and I recently booked Hale Pohaku in April 2013 for a week and we used it as the venue for our intimate beach wedding and reception. The home is wonderful and the location is perfect!! Both the property manager and the owner were very responsive to any of our questions and needs. We highly recommend this vacation home and can not wait to comeback and stay here again!!

If your looking for a charming house away from the big crowds but yet close enough to easily access them, this is a great house. It's a nice house on a beautiful beach. Another cool thing is that it's been featured in Hawaii Five-0 and we actually watched the show that featured the house while we were staying in the house.
