Top Waterfall Hikes on O’ahu

Manoa Falls

Another one of the most popular waterfall hikes on O’ahu, Manoa Falls is often crowded. However, this easy, beginner trail leads to a breathtaking waterfall with a 150-foot drop. Trek through the jungle to spot unique flora, foliage, and wildlife along the way. Though it is known as an easier trail, hikers should still be wary of mud and slippery rocks from the running water.

Lulumahu Falls

More experienced hikers looking for an adventure should consider visiting Lulumahu Falls. One of the more difficult waterfall hikes on O’ahu, this trail takes most people about an hour to an hour and a half round trip. Before reaching the 50-foot waterfall, you’ll hike through a dense bamboo forest and cross over streams.

This trail is located on a government-owned property, so hikers are required by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply to obtain a permit before embarking on this path. If you decide to venture into this area, be sure to do some research as there are no signs to guide visitors. Parking is also quite difficult to find, so we highly recommend getting dropped off before you head out on the trail.

Laie Falls

Another challenging hike, Laie Falls Trail also requires a permit, though it is a relatively easy and quick process. If you’re looking to trek up a difficult trail, this 7.9-mile route is for you. Hikers are rewarded with outstanding views of the surrounding mountains and a quiet, secluded swimming area near the fall. Though the fall itself is only about 15 feet, you can often spot other small waterfalls along the way.

Likeke Falls

Likeke Falls is a great family-friendly waterfall hike on O’ahu! At just .9 miles total, even your little ones can tag along for the journey. There’s minimal elevation gain here, too. Plus, the falls flow year-round here, meaning you’ll have a stunning view no matter when you visit! If you want a short waterfall hike with stunning views, Likeke Falls is the place for you.

Waimea Falls

Waimea Falls is one of the most popular waterfall hikes on O’ahu. Located on the North Shore, this 3.5 mile hike is a must-see. You will have to pay a small fee to enter Waimea Valley to access the falls, but it’s well worth the price as they do important work to preserve the cultural and botanical features of the area. Plus, you can visit the onsite botanical garden! If you’re traveling with elderly family members, this is a great option too—there is a shuttle up to the falls for those who can’t complete the 3.5 mile hike. Everyone has a chance to see the beauty of these Hawai’i falls!

Waipuilani Falls

These falls near the Pali Lookout are a hidden gem on O’ahu. It can be easy to get lost, and the trail is quite slippery, so we’d recommend only experienced hikers take on this trail. Additionally, it’s a good idea to take along the All Trails app to make sure you don’t stray too far from the trail.

If you do want to brave the trail though, the view is incredible once you find the falls. Make sure your shoes have good traction! The twin falls are quite stunning, and you’ll be glad you trekked out once you see them in their glory. You can also explore some caves around the trail; there’s even one between the two waterfalls!
